Bookkeeping for Nerang businesses

Nerang is where a lot of the Gold Coast’s actual work gets done. The industrial estate off Spencer Road, Gardens Drive and Lawrence Drive is full of workshops, fabricators, auto repairers, civil contractors, equipment hire and transport operators — the businesses that build and service everything happening on the coastal strip.

Those businesses have a bookkeeping problem the office-based ones do not: the paperwork happens in a ute. Receipts live in the glovebox, invoices go out from a phone on site, and the BAS gets thought about the week it is due. Meanwhile the money coming in is lumpy, the subcontractor payments are constant, and the ATO wants a TPAR every August.

We set the file up so the admin happens as the work happens — receipts captured on the phone through Hubdoc, invoices raised from site, bank feeds coded weekly — and your quarterly BAS becomes a review rather than a scramble.

Why Nerang trade businesses choose us

We speak the language

Progress claims, retentions, variations, back charges, plant and equipment, contra deals with other trades. You should not have to explain to your bookkeeper why the invoice total and the amount banked are different.

Your GST lands in the right quarter

Deposits, progress payments and retentions each have their own GST timing. Get it wrong and you either pay GST on money you have not received yet, or you cop an amendment later. We get it right the first time.

A fixed monthly fee on a lumpy income

$347 or $650 a month, agreed up front. On a business where cash flow swings with the build cycle, a known fixed cost beats an hourly invoice you cannot predict.

BAS lodgement for Nerang businesses

Most Nerang businesses lodge quarterly. Lodging electronically through a registered BAS agent gives you the concessional dates below rather than the standard ones — roughly four extra weeks on three of the four quarters.

QuarterStandard due dateLodged through a BAS agent
Q1 — July to September28 October25 November
Q2 — October to December28 February28 February (no extension)
Q3 — January to March28 April26 May
Q4 — April to June28 July25 August

That extra four weeks is worth more to a trade business than to most — it lets the quarter’s retentions and final claims settle before the statement goes in.

If you lodge monthly, the activity statement is due on the 21st of the following month. The December statement is the exception — businesses under $10 million turnover reporting GST monthly through an agent have until 21 February.

We do not lodge on the last afternoon. Your figures are finalised and sent to you for sign-off with time to query anything before it goes to the ATO.

TPAR and subcontractor payments

If you are in building and construction and you pay subcontractors, you have to lodge a Taxable Payments Annual Report by 28 August each year, listing every contractor you paid and how much. The ATO cross-matches it against what those contractors declared, so the detail has to be right.

The mistake we fix most often in Nerang files is contractors set up as plain expense lines with no ABN captured, which leaves you reconstructing twelve months of payments in the last week of August. We code subcontractor payments properly through the year so the TPAR is a report you run, not a project you dread.

It is also worth checking whether the people you call subcontractors are contractors in the ATO’s eyes. Getting that wrong exposes you to super guarantee charge and PAYG shortfalls going back years, and it is one of the more common audit triggers in construction.

Job costing, progress claims and fuel tax credits

If you want to know which jobs actually made money, the file has to be set up for it from the start — tracking categories or projects in Xero, costs allocated as they are incurred, and labour costed in rather than sitting in one lump wages account. We will set that up and then give you a monthly job profitability report alongside the P&L.

Fuel tax credits are the other thing regularly left on the table. If you run heavy vehicles, plant or equipment on diesel you may be able to claim credits on your BAS. The rates change twice a year and eligibility differs between on-road and off-road use, so it is worth having calculated properly rather than guessed at or ignored.

Onsite bookkeeping in Nerang

We visit clients around the Nerang industrial estate — Spencer Road, Gardens Drive, Lawrence Drive and the streets off them — as well as the Nerang town centre and the yards out toward Carrara and Highland Park.

For most trade clients the first meeting is onsite, because that is where the paperwork and the ute actually are. After that the monthly work runs remotely and you barely notice it happening.

Payroll, Single Touch Payroll and payday super

Award interpretation for the building and construction trades, site allowances, RDOs, apprentice rates, travel and tool allowances, and Single Touch Payroll reporting every pay run.

Since 1 July 2026, payday super requires super contributions to reach each employee’s fund within seven business days of payday rather than quarterly. For a Nerang business paying a crew weekly or fortnightly, that is a meaningful change to both the payroll process and the cash flow rhythm. If your super is still going out quarterly, you are already exposed.

Catch-up bookkeeping and overdue BAS

Falling behind on the BAS is close to an occupational hazard in the trades, and it is fixable.

We bring the file current, lodge the outstanding statements in the right order, and where there is a genuine reason for the delay we can approach the ATO about a payment arrangement or a remission of penalties on your behalf. Catch-up work is quoted as a fixed price once we have looked at the file, so you know what getting clean costs before you commit to it.

Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks

We work in Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks, with Hubdoc for receipt capture so paperwork is photographed once and filed automatically. If you are still running the business out of a spreadsheet and a shoebox, we will get you set up on software properly, migrate the history, and train you on the bits you actually need to touch.
