Bookkeeping for Arundel businesses

Arundel is a working suburb in the northern half of the city. The business park and light industrial tenancies off Brisbane Road and Napper Road hold warehousing, distribution, transport, trade suppliers and service businesses, while the health and education facilities through the area and the Parkwood precinct next door add a professional layer on top.

For a warehousing or distribution business, the bookkeeping question is almost always the same: what is actually landing in margin once freight, handling and storage are counted. Answering it takes a file where those costs are tracked rather than swept into overheads, and that is how we set them up.

Why Arundel businesses choose us

Landed cost, not just purchase price

Freight in, customs, handling and storage counted into the cost of the goods, so your margin reflects what it actually costs to get a product onto a shelf and out the door.

Fleet and equipment handled correctly

Chattel mortgages, hire purchase and leases each have a different GST treatment and are regularly coded the wrong way round. We get them right and keep the asset register current.

A fixed monthly fee

$347 or $650 a month, agreed up front, with no hourly billing and no surprise invoices.

BAS lodgement for Arundel businesses

Most Arundel businesses lodge quarterly. Lodging electronically through a registered BAS agent gives you the concessional dates below rather than the standard ones — roughly four extra weeks on three of the four quarters.

QuarterStandard due dateLodged through a BAS agent
Q1 — July to September28 October25 November
Q2 — October to December28 February28 February (no extension)
Q3 — January to March28 April26 May
Q4 — April to June28 July25 August

Where you import goods, the extra four weeks usually means the quarter’s customs entries have all come through before the statement is prepared — which matters, because the import GST is claimed on the customs documentation rather than the supplier invoice.

If you lodge monthly, the activity statement is due on the 21st of the following month. The December statement is the exception — businesses under $10 million turnover reporting GST monthly through an agent have until 21 February.

We do not lodge on the last afternoon. Your figures are finalised and sent to you for sign-off with time to query anything before it goes to the ATO.

Warehousing, distribution and transport

Stock on hand carried properly on the balance sheet rather than expensed on purchase, with freight and handling built into landed cost so gross margin means something. Where you import, deferred GST and customs entries need to be handled on the customs documentation, which is a distinction that goes wrong in a lot of files.

On the cost side, fleet is usually the largest line after wages. Fuel tax credits may be claimable where vehicles and plant qualify, with different treatment for on-road and off-road use and rates that change twice a year. Vehicle finance also needs care — on a chattel mortgage the GST is claimable up front, while on a lease it comes through with each payment.

Driver payroll brings its own award considerations: overtime, loadings, allowances and travel, all of which need to be interpreted rather than approximated.

Health, education and professional services

The health and education facilities through Arundel and the neighbouring Parkwood precinct support a cluster of allied health, therapy and professional practices. GST-free versus taxable service coding, service-entity arrangements, and payroll across employed and contracted practitioners are the recurring issues, and the contractor question is the one that carries the most exposure.

Trades and suppliers

The trade suppliers and service businesses across the Brisbane Road and Napper Road tenancies. Job costing, subcontractor payments coded with ABNs for the TPAR due 28 August, and equipment finance treated correctly.

Onsite bookkeeping in Arundel

We visit clients throughout the Arundel business park and the Brisbane Road and Napper Road tenancies, as well as the health and professional practices through the suburb and the Parkwood precinct.

For a warehouse the first visit is best done onsite — how stock and paperwork actually move through the building is much quicker to see than to be told.

Payroll, Single Touch Payroll and payday super

Award interpretation for transport, warehousing and allied health, overtime and shift loadings, allowances, leave accruals and Single Touch Payroll reporting every run.

Since 1 July 2026, payday super requires super contributions to reach each employee’s fund within seven business days of payday rather than quarterly. For a transport or warehousing business paying weekly, super moving with every pay run is a direct working capital change and worth modelling before it bites.

Catch-up bookkeeping and overdue BAS

Distribution businesses fall behind when a busy period runs long. The stock side usually needs the most work to bring back into line.

We bring the file current, lodge the outstanding statements in the right order, and where there is a genuine reason for the delay we can approach the ATO about a payment arrangement or a remission of penalties on your behalf. Catch-up work is quoted as a fixed price once we have looked at the file, so you know what getting clean costs before you commit to it.

Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks

We work in Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks, with Hubdoc for receipt capture so paperwork is photographed once and filed automatically. If you are still running the business out of a spreadsheet and a shoebox, we will get you set up on software properly, migrate the history, and train you on the bits you actually need to touch.
